Modems provide an alternative way of surfing easily but the disadvantage is that modem browsing is very expensive especially considering the mobile service providers you are using. In Kenya we have Safaricom, Airtel and Orange which provide affordable modem browsing services. In this article, I am going to show you how you can save your modem browsing costs. If you have been using 100mb for an hour while browsing, you will be able to browser for two hours with the same 100mb using the following modem browsing tips.
1. Disable automatic system updates.
System updates always consume a lot of data. If your computer is designed to check system updates automatically, then this process will require using your internet bundles and downloading those system updates also costs your internet. System updates include the operating system, anti virus and computer programs that are installed.
To disable automatic system updates in your computer, do the following :
>>Click on Start in your computer startup menu.
>>Type '' Windows Updates '' in the start menu search box.
>>Click on Windows Update Program.
>>Click ''Change Settings'' in the window that opens.
>>Choose the option '' Never check for updates ''
>>Click Ok to save
NB Remember you can undo the settings after you are done browsing using your modem.
Also disable your anti virus from checking updates. This can be done in the settings menu contained in your anti virus program. Do the same with other computer programs you have installed for example Microsoft Office.
2. Disable loading of images from your browser.
Images consume a lot of data especially high quality hd images. You can test this by visiting an only picture website using your modem and see how long your data will last there. Am sure it will take a short time for your data to be exhausted. There are two ways of saving modem browsing cost through disabling images from loading :
i) Avoid visiting sites that have many images.
ii) If you are using the Firefox browser, then you can use this image block addon to prevent images from loading. The addon will ensure your browsing is faster since image loads slow down browsing speed. Just visit this link and download then install this Firefox addon for free.
3. Avoid online video streaming sites like YouTube and Vimeo.
Video streaming consumes the largest portion of your data. It's advisable to do such streaming using public internet or wifi. To save your modem browsing costs, simply avoid such sites.
